Cha cha

This is a fun, lively, flirty, cheeky and playful dance that grew out of the Cuban Mambo. It consists of triple chasse steps (cha cha cha’s) and rock steps.  This is an exuberant dance that will get your heart pumping and put a smile on your face.

Samba

Samba is the national dance of Brazil, celebrated every year.  The samba is a fun, upbeat, lively dance that progresses counter-clockwise around the floor. It is characterized by its syncopated timing, bounce, rolling hip action and pelvic tilt and a great deal of rhythm is expressed throughout the torso.

Rumba

Rumba is universally recognized as the dance of love, distinguished by it’s romantic feel.  It is danced to slow, sensual music with a Latin beat and features a hip action known as “Cuban Motion.”  Rumba is derived from the Afro-Caribbean dance “Son” and has been popular in this country as a ballroom dance since the 1930’s.

Paso Doble

Paso Doble is a stirring, dramatic, powerful dance based on a Spanish bull fight. The leader in this dance represents the Matador and the lady symbolizes his red cape.

Jive

Jive is the faster version of the swing. It’s a very boppy dance where dancers use more bouncy movements.  It’s one the most energetic of all the dances.  Jive evolved in the early 1940s from a dance called Jitterbug, a form of Swing dance.  It shares many figures with Swing, such as underarm turns, swivels.  The great thing about it is that it can be danced to all sorts of music – old, new, Swing, Rock’n’Roll.  Jive is a fun dance and certainly one of the most fantastic ways to get and stay in shape. So grab your dancing shoes and get jiving.

Salsa

This is a truly great club dance, accessible, sexy, and constantly evolving as new generations come to the Salsa scene.  Salsa as a dance style began in New York in the Latino dance clubs (Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Dominican) in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Mambo

Mambo is a fast and spicy dance characterized by strong Cuban motion, staccato movement and expression of rhythm through the body.  Mambo evolved from a fusion of danzon, son and American jazz. Danzon has its origins from Europe (chamber music) and African/Haitian drum rhythms.

Waltz

The name Waltz came from the Italian word “volver” meaning to turn or revolve.  It evolved from a German and Austrian peasant dance called the Landler in ¾ time replacing the heavy hopping and jumping movements with more polished and graceful gliding.  It was also the first widely popular dance to feature a closed position.  Waltz is characterized by rise and fall and by sway on the side steps.  The feet remain in contact with the floor at all times, creating a smooth, gliding look.

Tango

Tango is characterized by a close hold, a low center of gravity and an emphasis on Contra Body movement.  Movement is stealthy, almost cat-like and has an unmistakable staccato feel and major dramatic attitude.  A very passionate dance very similar to the Rumba.

Foxtrot

The Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of dances.  Foxtrot has smooth gliding steps with a heel lead, controlled movement and an easygoing look.

Viennese Waltz

Waltz began to appear on the operatic stages of Vienna in 1787.  As the popularity of the Waltz increased in Vienna, so did its tempo.  Sometime in the early 1800’s, Austrian composers such as Johann Strauss and Franz Lanner increased the number of measures per minute in their Waltzes.

Quickstep

which is a fast, light, and elegant dance in which the partners to fly around the dance floor with a series of kicks, skips, jumps, and runs.
